Did you Facebook on Christmas Day?

Max (aka Shelli) @codenamemax | December 30th, 2009 - 8:24 am

When you look at a list of top 10 websites in the world, or the U.S., which site do you expect to see on top? Google. Although Google still dominates the list most of the time, with 6.7 percent of all U.S. visits between January and November 2009, on Christmas day another site was on top: Facebook.

According to Hitwise, this was the first time that Facebook was the most-visited U.S. site. It’s logical: On Christmas day, everyone wanted to connect with their friends and family, which pushed the largest social networking site to the top.

But it’s still a testament to how huge Facebook really is; and it’s still growing. Add to that the fact that “Facebook” was the top search term in 2009, and its 350 million users, and it’s clear that Facebook is dominating the web in a way very few web services have done before.

Two women, an idea and 2500 quilts later for fire victims – ABC News

All too often we hear the sad or the bad news but occasionally we hear a great story, especially this one about Anne Galetti and Judy Gipps who thought they would get a few friends together to make a few quilts for the bushfire victims and came up with amazing results.

These two women played unique roles in Victoria’s bushfire recovery programs and have been honoured at Melbourne’s Craft Expo.

The pair, Anne Galetti and Judy Gipps, cottoned on to the idea of giving something to those who had lost everything. They have been stitching for months, working tirelessly and selflessly for victims of the Black Saturday bushfires in Victoria.

Ms Galetti says the idea came to her over coffee.

“We had some friends from Marysville that lost their homes and were sitting around having a coffee and I suggested they found some names for me and we’d make quilts. We make quilts for the children’s hospital.”

By the time they had a list of 60 fire victims, they wondered if they had bitten off more than they could chew.

Ms Galetti says within a couple of days the list had grown to 300.

“We started bagging them up and we put them all in bags with ribbons on them and with Victorian quilters names on them and their names. So they were getting a present. It wasn’t somebody else’s cast-offs,” she said.

Offers of help came pouring in from all over the world.

Now Ms Gipps says they have delivered almost 2,500 quilts to fire victims.

“I’d have so many of them we’d have to pack the 4-wheel drive up and drive out to Healesville for the day,” she said.

The two women were honoured for their contribution to the bushfire appeal.

But the retiring local Member of Parliament, Fran Bailey says the momentum they helped generate is being lost.

“People are drowning in a sea of bureaucracy in trying to get a permit dealing with the new building regulations and everything has got to be fast-tracked,” she said.

And the orders are still coming in.

A woman from Kinglake placed an order today.

And Ms Galetti says when the final quilt is delivered, they will go back to doing what they were doing before.

“Go back to being making quilts for the children’s hospital which is where we started in the first place.”

“It’s been an amazing thing to do, I have to say.”
