Superbowl: The only time People actually watch the Television Commercials…..
Sun 7 17.32 @codenamemax: superbowl tomorrow. the only time of the year when people actually watch the Television Commercials…..
After that brilliant tweet I thought I might look into the ads a bit more. The Chicago Sun-Times had a brief rundown on what we might see What to watch for when watching Super Bowl ads
A week earlier, the Chicago Sun-Times ran a story No Clydesdales? The plan had been to scrap the Clydesdale ads in favor of edgier stuff. This is one instance media reporting did some good. The response from the announcement drew so many negative responses they’ve put up a Facebook page where you can vote for the spot they eliminated or two competing spots.
Article:What to watch for when watching Super Bowl ads
Super Bowl Sunday is advertising’s biggest day in the United States. It is the only day of the year when it can safely be said that almost every TV watcher actually looks forward to watching commercials — at least all those that will air from kickoff to final play during the Super Bowl. Marketers paying upward of $3 million for 30 seconds of air time during the game wouldn’t have it any other way.
Here are five things to watch out for during this year’s Super Bowl of Advertising:
1. TIM TEBOW AND FOCUS ON THE FAMILY. Creatively speaking, it doesn’t matter how good — or bad — this anti-abortion ad actually is, it’s already become the most-talked about TV spot set to debut during the big game. And that’s before anyone has actually seen the commercial starring college football star Tebow. Some have said an advocacy ad of this sort has no business being shown during a major football game. But CBS, which is televising the game, thought otherwise. In a mere 30 seconds, the ad itself will have come and gone during the game. But no doubt the discussion will continue. And Focus on the Family definitely will have gotten its money’s worth from this spot.
2. THE CLYDESDALES ARE BACK. When Anheuser-Busch first announced its five-minute lineup of Super Bowl commercials two weeks ago, the brewery planned to run a total of nine spots. No surprise there. What did shock many observers, though, was A-B’s decision not to include a single spot featuring the iconic Clydesdales. Apparently the reaction prompted Anheuser-Busch to reconsider, and after a Clydesdale spot from DDB/Chicago was re-edited, the brewery put it up on Facebook and asked the public to vote on whether it should run during the Super Bowl. The public said “yes.”
3. THE BATTLE OF THE JOB SEARCH WEB SITES. As President Obama made clear during his recent State of the Union speech, a lot of Americans are searching for jobs. So two major job search sites, Monster.com and careerbuilder.com, are duking it out on the Super Bowl to drive visitors to their respective Web operations. Monster.com is going with a spot about a fiddling beaver, and careerbuilder.com plans to air a professional remake of one of two concepts submitted by layman creatives. Careerbuilder.com is keeping mum about which of the two spots will air until it debuts during the Super Bowl.
4. A NOD TO NOSTALGIA. Boost Mobile is airing a parody remake of the original 1985 Super Bowl Shuffle music video, which should provide a nice shot of nostalgia for Chicago Bears fans. The parody will feature the stars of the original video, including among others Mike Singletary, Jim McMahon, Willie Gault, Otis Wilson and a special appearance by Mike Ditka.
5. DID SOMEONE SAY FREE FOOD? The Denny’s restaurant chain made a big splash during last year’s Super Bowl with its free breakfast offer. So they’re back again with a similar offer. After all, times are still tough. This time around the advertising focuses on the chickens that will have to lay all those eggs to feed the tens of thousands of free-food seekers. Denny’s wants to make sure the 100 million or so Super Bowl watchers all know about the offer, so the company is running not one, but three different spots during the game to tout the free food promotion.
